Christian Blog and Online Women's Ministry in South Africa - Cup of Faith

How to Own Your Everyday

I started following Jordan Lee Dooley a few years ago and love everything about her and her mission, so I pretty much let out a squeal when Christian Art Media sent me her book, Own Your Everyday, which I have dubbed the book that every woman needs to read.

Own Your Everyday is described “as an empowering girlfriend’s guide to living a purpose-driven life.” And shares an unfiltered look at the rocky roads and tough mountains that has lead Jordan to building an online following that equips women with practical tools to pursue your own purpose.

From accidentally starting a small business instead of using her college degree, to embarrassing herself onstage in front of thousands, to wasting time worrying about what others think or say, Jordan Lee Dooley knows exactly how that feels—and she’s learned some important lessons about living a purposeful life along the way.”

I read a lot about people pursuing their God-given purpose and it sometimes has me wondering if I missed my bus, or lightning in the sky indicating the path I need to pursue. Sometimes – most times – I feel really lost and am not quite sure that I am doing what God set out for me to do. Being a planner and perfectionist means that I fear failure, don’t like unexpected changes and hate feeling out of control, so when life unexpectedly doesn’t go the way I want it to, it can wreak havoc.

Learning to pick up the pieces and adapt is quite a challenge, but more than that, it leaves me feeling like I am failing to pursue my purpose and fools me into believing that everyone else just seems to have it figured out, which makes me question my self-worth – I know, so dramatic, but I am sure it’s something you can all relate to at some point of your life.

Truthfully, I don’t have all the answers. I don’t have it all figured out and my plans often don’t go the way I expect them to. As an example, two years ago I started to pursue applying for my British passport so that eventually we can move to the UK but there have been so many challenges, setbacks and hold-ups that most days, I am filled with self-doubt and wondering if this is some sort of sign that it isn’t meant to be. (Everyone say it with me, “Nobody said it was going to be easy.”)

Even taking something as simple as this blog; I often wonder if I am just writing into a void, adding clutter to an already full piece of the internet and maybe, I have fooled myself into thinking that I can help – that I can spread encouragement and inspiration. Who am I? I am just little old me! There’s nothing special or significant about my story – so why do I feel like this space can help someone?

A few months ago, I stumbled upon the statement, “God calls us to be faithful, not successful.” This is probably one of the most profound things I have read. God expects us to fail and perhaps even wants us to fail. Why? Because He wants us to surrender to Him and be faithful! God is holding our hand, guiding us on this path. He doesn’t expect us to have it all figured out!

It’s okay to not always have a plan, to make mistakes, to look like a fool, to stumble, be confused, go back to start again… IT’S OKAY! Jordan’s book shares a very relatable look at how unpredictable life can be and reminds you that behind the filtered pictures that we scroll through on social media, that there are real people going through real things just like you and me. She offers so much insight and guidance to navigating the difficult and confusing times and manages to build you up and make you believe in yourself again.

There was so much in her book that I could relate to; from her strong bond with her granny (who the book is dedicated to) to being a recovering perfectionist, her relationship with faith, getting married young, and even the trials and disappointments she’s faced along the way -I loved every nugget of wisdom that this book holds. It’s the sort of book that I vow to read over and over again, because it’s filled with so much guidance, heart, and encouragement that is applicable for every season of life.
