Be Still My Soul

When the oceans rise and thunders roar I will soar with you above the storm, Father you are King over the Flood I will be still know you are God. Find rest my soul in Christ alone, know His power in quietness and trust…” (Still – Hillsong)

Tonight ,I was busy reading my bible, when 1 Kings 19 11-13, hit me and rushed into my soul like water rushing from a flooded dam.

11 The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. 12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper. 13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Elijah is on the run, he’s hiding, his soul is in despair, he doesn’t know where to go or what to do, he’s feeling hopeless and lost in the desert, in fact in verse 4 he even prays that he might die, saying he’s had enough.

Then from verse 11 the Lord tells Elijah to go and wait in the presence of the Lord for he is about to pass by. I imagine that the shattering of rocks must have been so loud and chaotic, that the earthquake cracking the ground turned everything upside down, and that the fire roared and devoured everything in its path, yet after it all… comes the gentle whisper of God.

How often is it that when we’re being hit left, right, and centre, in the raging storm, we try to find God but instead, get lost and overwhelmed because the waves are too rough. So instead, we end up drowning in our troubles and spend our time crying out, overwhelmed and deafened by the earth-shattering chaos that surrounds us, and we end up not being able to hear God’s whispers.

To hear God’s gentle whisper, we need to learn to Be Still.  We have to literally shut out every roaring sound within our minds and step into the quietness, to listen from the depths of our being, to find Him.

If we try to hear God above the chaos and the confusion, we will fail because everything He whispers will be lost in the noise. We have to give up fighting the waves, winds and fires that shake our lives, and learn to Be Still, and surrender our soul to the quietness. You will soon find that those moments are the ones that bring the calm and peace, as you accept, learn to let go and trust the Lord.

Be still my soul, be still for that Whisper, that still gentle voice of the Lord is more powerful than any raging storm. Be still my soul Be still.
