The job you thought was yours slips away. The marriage you prayed for falls apart. The dream you nurtured quietly in your heart never seems to take shape. Disappointment is such a universal experience that you almost wonder why it still catches us off guard.

And yet, when it hits, it cuts deep. It leaves us wondering, Where is God in this? Why didn’t He come through the way I hoped?

If you’ve ever whispered those words through tears, take heart: you’re not alone. Scripture is filled with people who knew disappointment intimately. But it’s also filled with the faithfulness of God meeting His children in their lowest moments. Today, let’s walk through how we can bring our disappointments to Him, and how we can find the strength to rise again.

1. Disappointment Is Part of the Faith Journey

Sometimes, when life doesn’t go as planned, we’re quick to blame ourselves. We wonder, Did I miss God’s will? Did I pray wrong? Am I not good enough? I found myself asking these very questions after my divorce.
But disappointment is not foreign to God’s people.

David longed to build a temple for God, but God said no. Moses led faithfully for decades, only to be barred from entering the Promised Land. Paul begged for his thorn in the flesh to be removed, and God responded not with deliverance, but with grace. Even Jesus faced disappointment – His closest friends fell asleep while He prayed in Gethsemane, and the crowds who once adored Him later cried out for His crucifixion.

Their stories remind us: disappointment doesn’t mean we are out of God’s favour. It simply means we are human, living in a broken world, walking a road where even the most faithful saints have stumbled.

2. Be Honest With God

One of the most healing steps we can take is to name our disappointment before God. Too often we plaster on a smile, convincing ourselves that “good Christians” shouldn’t feel let down. But denial isn’t faith; it’s avoidance.

The psalmists show us a better way. “How long, Lord? Will you forget me forever? How long will you hide your face from me?” Psalm 13:1 ESV. Or this cry: “My tears have been my food day and night” (Psalm 42:3 ESV).
God isn’t threatened by our honesty. In fact, He invites it. When we pour out our disappointment to Him – our confusion, our grief, even our anger – we open the door for His comfort to enter.

Maybe today you need to write your own psalm. Tell God exactly what you hoped for, how it hurts to let it go, and where you feel lost. That kind of raw honesty is not weakness; it’s worship.

3. Remember Who He Is

Here’s the tricky thing about disappointment: it doesn’t just bruise our hearts; it clouds our view of God. The enemy whispers, He’s not really good. He doesn’t care. You can’t trust Him with your future.

But disappointment must drive us deeper into God’s character, not away from it. When feelings scream otherwise, we anchor ourselves in truth:

God is faithful. “The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end.” Lamentations 3:22 ESV

God is wise. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways.” Isaiah 55:9 ESV

God is good. “The Lord is good, a stronghold in the day of trouble” Nahum 1:7 ESV

We may not see the full picture, but we can trust the One who does.

4. Let God Reframe the Story

Sometimes what feels like the end is really God’s redirection. Joseph knew what it was to be disappointed: betrayed, imprisoned, forgotten. And yet, years later, he could look his brothers in the eye and say, “You meant evil against me, but God meant it for good” (Genesis 50:20 ESV).

Could it be that your disappointment is not wasted either? That delay may be preparation. That closed door may be protection. That broken dream may be the soil for something even better to grow.

It doesn’t make the pain disappear, but it shifts our perspective from despair to expectation.

5. Lift Your Eyes to Eternal Hope

At its core, disappointment reminds us that this world will never fully satisfy. If every prayer was answered exactly as we wanted, if every dream came true, we might forget that we are pilgrims passing through.

Hebrews 11 speaks of those who “did not receive the things promised; they only saw them and welcomed them from a distance” (v. 13 NIV). Their unmet expectations kept their eyes fixed on a better country – a heavenly one.

Your hope is not tied to this moment, this job, this relationship, or this dream. Your hope is tied to Jesus – the One who bore ultimate disappointment on the cross so you could inherit eternal joy.

6. Picking Yourself Up: Practical Steps

So, what do you do when disappointment lingers like a heavy shadow? Here are some simple, biblical practices:

Pray honestly. Pour out your heart to God (see Psalm 62:8).

Cling to Scripture. Let His Word anchor you when emotions shift (see Psalm 119:105).

Lean on community. Don’t walk alone; allow others to carry your burdens (see Galatians 6:2).

Choose worship. Praise doesn’t erase the pain, but it lifts your eyes to God’s power (see Acts 16:25).

Look for redemption. Ask God how He might use even this disappointment for His glory (see Romans 8:28).

Rising after disappointment doesn’t mean pretending you’re fine. It means holding God’s hand as He leads you step by step toward healing and hope.

An Invitation to Hope

Friend, if you’re reading this through the lens of fresh disappointment, I want you to know this: you are not forgotten. God has not overlooked you. He has not abandoned your story.

Take a moment today to write down your disappointment. Name it clearly. Then, beside it, write one unshakable truth about God’s character. Let that truth become the banner over your pain. Because while disappointment may have the loudest voice right now, God has the final word.

A Prayer for the Disappointed Heart

Lord, I bring my disappointment before You today. You know the places where my heart feels heavy, where dreams have slipped away, where prayers seem unanswered. I confess that sometimes I struggle to trust You in the waiting. But today, I choose to believe You are still good, still faithful, still writing my story. Wrap me in Your comfort. Teach me to rest in Your presence. Heal what is broken, and use even this disappointment to draw me closer to You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

Final Encouragement

Disappointment doesn’t get the last say. Jesus does. And in Him, your story is still unfolding with purpose, hope, and glory. One day, every tear will be wiped away (Revelation 21:4). Until then, let disappointment lead you closer to the only One who never fails.

Before we wrap up the end of relationship month, I thought I’d share some of the relationship-focused books that we recommend from our partner, Struik Christian Media.

Swipe Right by Levi Lusko

In Swipe Right, Pastor Levi Lusko offers compelling reasons to make wise choices in matters of the heart—relationships, sex, dating, and marriage. He encourages readers to live each day knowing their present choices will immediately become part of their pasts, and that their pasts will inevitably come back to visit them in the future.

With equal parts prevention and cure, the book is not just a list of rules to live by but something to live for: God’s powerful plan for our lives. To get there we must learn how to swipe right—to live up in a left, right world—because what we do with sex and romance is truly an issue of life and death importance.

Why we love it:

Levi’s writing is raw, relatable and very honest. I love how he balances serious topics with light humour. (Read my full review here – by far my favourite book, this month!)

Have you ever felt that the man you thought was your soulmate has turned into more of a roommate? If so, then Lovestruck will help you see your marriage from a fresh perspective and reignite the passion that was there in the beginning. While the extent of the church’s message has traditionally been, “If you’re not married, don’t do it,” and “If you are married, don’t talk about it, ” it’s time to see what God has to say sexual intimacy.

Why we love it:

Sharon reminds and challenges us to be more intentional, with our relationships from beginning attractions and dating through marriages. She breaks down the Book of Solomon, in the most interesting way, by highlighting imagery and significant points and messaging to explain the scripture and what Solomon and His Bride’s courting and marriage looked like.

Are you willing to do whatever it takes to have the marriage you dreamed of? Interestingly, this is the question Clayton and Ashlee ask young couples before they get married and married couples in crisis. If they answer yes, then there is hope for the couple. If they are willing to commit to the hard work ahead, they have a very good shot.

Hope for Your Marriage is a book designed for couples who desire to have the best marriage possible. Every marriage has the potential to be incredible when God is at the center.

In Hope for Your Marriage, Clayton and Ashlee share personal stories on overcoming fairy-tale pitfalls; keeping Jesus at the center of your marriage; practicing healthy communication on sex, conflict, and forgiveness; declaring life over your marriage; and leaving a God-honoring legacy.

Why we love it:

This is the perfect read for newlyweds and in fact, any married couple. The book is refreshingly candid and shares stories that you can relate to, with practical advice that speaks straight to the heart.

Once upon a time… Marriage was forever. It was a covenant that knit one man and one woman together. This weaving made both stronger, nobler, and more vibrant expressions of who they were created to be. They were better together than either had been on their own. The wedding ceremony was but a beginning. It was the gateway to build their happily ever after. Each choice and action was designed to construct the life their union-represented. Husband and wife walked into the great unknown with hearts, hands, and voices intertwined to express the love of their Creator. How did we lose touch with this profound love story? In The Story of Marriage, John and Lisa Bevere invite you to rediscover God’s original plan. Whether you’re married, single, or engaged, your story is a part of His.

Why we love it:

This book reminds us that marriages aren’t perfect and it takes a lot of work. The study-style makes it great for couples to work through together, or on their own to discuss later. I love that both John and Lisa were very frank about the struggles they have endured, and found that openness encouraging.

In Our Best Life Together, Joel and Victoria Osteen want to encourage you in your marriage and remind you that God brought you together to help each other succeed and to become all He created you to be. There’s no better way to experience the fulfilling marriage God intends for you than to set aside a devotional time together each day and set your minds in the right direction for a positive, happy, faith-filled marriage. When you live together in unity, you honor God and open the door for His blessings to flow into every area of your life. If you will do your part, God will do His part, and you can live in love!

Anticipation high with a hope that danced inside her tormented soul.
Would he look into her eyes and know.
Would he see her ugly truth?
The hiddenness…….the wanting……….the desperate need.
Shame washed over her like groans from hell.
Former accolades and pats on the back shredded in the face of undisguised brokenness.
She was a woman without value who was trying to recall a vague impression of what she once was.
Groping inside her mind for a tiny glimpse of her former self. The woman before sin happened.
The scarlet letter that was branded into her soul.
Her nails dug into her flesh as if to rip out the stigma that clung to her like a second skin.
Would he love her; what was there to love. She was fallen, tainted, tagged.
There was no hope for a woman like her. The stones had broken her will to rise.
Sin loomed large and monstrous, mocking her attempts at freedom.
Her body twisted in agonised cries and searing pain.
She stumbled on the grassy verge and pounded the grief that was too much to bear.
A fallen woman racked with untold misery and blinding guilt.
She lay where she fell, too drained to continue. Wretched and rung out.

He saw her through the pressing throng and slowly pushed towards her.
Anna sobbed like a broken vessel.
“I am so lost Lord……….unloved – unworthy of love – I don’t belong – I am as a leper.
Great waves of compassion washed over him and with gentleness, he folded her into his arms.
Nothing hidden.
Mercy reached out to cleanse her tortured frame. To heal the bruises left by gossipmongers and nay-sayers.
“It is the end of you. What a shameful woman you are”. Voices that haunted her every sleeping moment. But God loved her with everlasting love.
“Oh, my Lord”, you know everything about me.
Heaven gazed at her remorse and grieved with her for loss and lives pained at her hand;
for innocence plundered and dignity spent.
Anna whimpered into God’s heart like a lost little girl.
kissing the hands that were pierced for her.

“My dearest Anna”, he wept, “Don’t you know that my grace is relentless……all-sufficient for you.
Nothing will ever change that”.
Her being shook with the power of truth that unshackled her shame,
the truth that removed the scarlet branding from around her neck and flung it inside the dilapidated vintage parked with great pride beside the barns faded wooden walls.
In an instant all things became new. She was free.
Free like an eagle gliding over mountain peaks and across emerald skies.
“Your presence gives me strength to walk amongst my accusers,
and your grace will follow after me and preserve my soul”.
Her words melted into tears of joy as she lifted her face to a holy God who pardoned her sin.
A Saviour who wrote a promise upon the tablet of her heart.
A Father who made all things new and gave her a fresh start. A second chance.
The Balm of Gilead had come for her just as he said he would.

The LORD is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. he protects their bones, not one of them will be broken. The enemies of the righteous will be condemned.

He had kept his promise.

“Anna, Anna’! slowly her mother’s voice reached through her vision and plucked her back to reality. You are too late to meet your appointment. Why on earth did you sleep so late?!”
Anna sat up and at once felt the tears on her cheeks, and the absence of the scarlet tag. It’s imprinted barely visible on her chest.

She hastily dressed and ran towards the lopsided barn seeking a dilapidated vintage that held the answers she sought.

She felt free.

Free like an eagle gliding over mountain peaks and across emerald skies.

Free,

Free at last!

Well, sometimes it is us that is the one that needs healing.

I do not know one person who has not been hurt in a romantic relationship. If we allow ourselves to carry that hurt into our new relationship, we run the risk of history repeating itself.

I know someone who was hurt very deeply. This person has not healed from this hurt and now the new person that they are in a relationship with is paying the price. I have no doubt that the enemy smiles on when these wounds open up time and time again. Let us not give him a foothold. Pray and seek God.

Ask Him to reveal where you trust Him the least…it is usually in the areas that you hold the most fears. We serve a God that can part seas and raise the dead. Let’s not forget that. He can heal you and heal the ones that you love.

Prayer
Dear Jesus,
Search my heart. Reveal to me the pain that I am holding onto.
Help me to trust you Father, for you care for me.
In your precious name,
Amen

This devotional has been created with traditional, blended, single-parent and broken families in mind and hopes to provide impactful devotions that will help draw your family closer to God. Packed with 52 devotions, this is a fantastic weekly activity that encourages families to pause from the hustle and bustle of juggling work, school, and extracurricular activities to bond, discuss and explore our relationship with God.

I really love how simple and easy this devotional is to use, it features conversation starters, bible verses, stories and more. Each week, family members are encouraged to share the best and worse moments of their day, and my favourite is the prompt for family members to share where they encountered Jesus and to talk about something or someone that reminded them of Him. This small and simple prompt encourages us to look for more of Jesus in the people we encounter each day and has a pleasant impact on our day-to-day interactions. From there, the devotional takes you through a Bible reading, followed by a story, a fun activity, a prayer, a prompt to partake in random act of kindness and a section for parents which provides tips and advice for reinforcing the lesson of the week, with a space to write down notes.

Devotional time as a family can be an incredible way to encourage children to grow and explore their faith. As we already know, children learn from what we do, and by giving them the opportunity to observe and learn from us during devotional time, they too are encouraged to seek Him in their own quiet time and are familiar with how to praise, pray and worship our Father. I really love that devotional time encourages children to turn their eyes to Him, and gently creates the practice of spending time in His word, learning, meditating, seeking and praising Him for His works while also making God the centre of family time.

Personally, I find that creating time for family devotions has meant forcing myself to step away – both mentally and physically – from the other distractions in life, and allows me to spend time openly chatting and encouraging my children to explore their relationship with God.

I recently learnt that my 6-year-old son is too shy to pray, and prefers when I pray for our family because he feels that there is a right and wrong way to pray, so I have been spending more and more time encouraging him to pray and showing him that praying is simply talking to God. This sort of conversation was only prompted because my child feels safe and secure in discussing matters of faith – it’s not something he would have openly admitted to other family members or a teacher, and it’s something that he could have very easily grown up believing if it weren’t for our family devotional time. Now, I am ensuring he has the tools so that he can build and explore his faith confidently, not worrying that he will be judged by the size of his prayers.

Growing Together is a fantastic addition to any bookshelf and has proven to be an amazing resource for families who want to actively seek time with Him. I love the important conversations it has prompted and that it mindfully helps both children and parents navigate this special time spent with Him, as a family. Besides the insightful lessons and stories that this book hold, it also encourages families to practise kindness and to look for Him in each and every day, transforming every encounter into an opportunity to connect with God.

Carrying the spirit of unforgiveness will eventually weigh you down, it will kill all your dreams and aspirations because you are delaying and cheating yourself out of God’s blessings He has prepared for you.

Unforgiveness takes you to a place of resentment and bitterness. When you carry bitterness, it weakens you and destroys your inner peace. You are not doing the people who have wronged you a favour when you forgive someone, but rather yourself.

Then Peter came to Jesus and asked, ” Lord how many times shall l forgive my brother when he sins against me? Up to seven times? Jesus answered l tell you not seven times but seventy – seven times”. – Matthew 18:21 NIV

Some of us think that in order for us to forgive those who have wronged us, they need to come and apologize for all their trespasses, but Jesus is not urging us to do it in that manner. In fact, some people may not even realise or admit to their wrongdoings but God’s answer to Peter encourages us to keep forgiving because it will produce a sweet flowing stream of peace and joy in our lives. We can do it sisters; we can live a life of happiness by practising forgiveness. We may fail to understand the paths that have lead others to hurt or betray us, you might even feel that I am writing this without understanding the hurt you’ve faced, but believe me, I have felt pain too and been left with the bruises. I still choose to forgive because when I ran to the Lord, He told me that unless l forgive them and all that has been done to me, l will never be happy and those wrongdoings will continue to torment me. I then realised that the quicker l learnt to forgive freely, the sooner l was going to be free and receive God’s blessings upon my life.

Praise the Lord, I my soul and forget not all His benefits who forgives all your sins and heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit and crowns you with love and compassion. – Psalm 103: 2-4 NIV

God forgives and forgets our sins. As we are forgiven so we ought to forgive- it’s not by mighty nor by power but by my spirit says the Lord. It will not be of value if we want to be forgiven and yet we don’t forgive others of their trespasses. I hear a lot of people saying it’s not easy and it doesn’t come naturally, but God gives us the strength to forgive. From today, no matter the pain caused, let’s vocalize forgiveness, by saying it with your mouth and actions, and you will surely see a tremendous transformation.

Say this, I’m a child of God and I’m filled with His unfailing love, so l find it easy to forgive and forget what others have done in my life, I’m free in Jesus name.

Life is more than food and the body more than clothes. Consider the Ravens, they do not sow or reap they have no storerooms or barn, yet God feeds them. And how much more valuable you are than birds, who of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? Since you cannot do this very little thing why do you worry about the rest?

Luke 12:22-26 NIV

I have encountered God in so many areas of my life and with so many in the world facing uncertainties as a result of Covid-19, I want to share my testimony of God’s promise to never leave us nor forsake us.

There was a time in our lives when my husband and I didn’t have a source of income to provide for our two beautiful children and ourselves. Month after month, there were bills to take care and we needed to put food on our table. I remember vividly that we would panic and look to others for help. Believe me, ladies this route in tackling a need in your life is the worst nightmare ever. We would get frustrated when people would promise but not deliver. So, eventually as children of God, we decided to focus on the word and the promises of God. The Holy Spirit ministered to me one afternoon He said: “Quit looking for help from mere man and look unto me for all your needs because men will fail you”.

From that day forward, we would pray and tell God all our needs, remember the Bible says,

Before they call l will answer, while they are still speaking l will hear.

Isaiah 65:24 NIV

We decided to stand upon the promises of God and we conquered. We would ask God in prayer for every little tiny thing and the word worked for us. Today, l stand here as a champion, a victor, an heir of God and a joint heir with Christ Jesus.

Whatever situation you might be going through the word will chart its course in your life. Refuse to believe anything that is contrary to the word. Put your faith to work and trust in God, He has never failed anyone and is not about to start.

During difficult times, it is easy and common for couples to attack each other, but I urge you to choose to ignore the fiery darts of the devil and encourage, empower and ask God to direct your paths. Many give up and fall victim to the devil, resulting in each going their separate ways, but remember, your spouse is not your enemy. You are a seed of Abraham and can never be disadvantaged. Christ Jesus the hope of glory lives in you. Rise up, dust yourself off, and fight until you win, for you have all it takes.

Train your mind to focus on the word of God.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardships, or persecution or famine, or nakedness or danger or sword.

Romans 8:35 NIV

We are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus our Lord. Whether it’s your marriage, children, business, work, academics or even your finances, the word of God has a solution to each and every situation. There is always a reason to smile, so choose to be happy no matter the circumstances, you may find yourself in.
